Gaming has been my dream job for practically my whole life.
And I’ve actually made money from it — twice, in two completely different eras. Behind the counter of a game trading store in the 2000s, and with my own gaming niche website in the 2010s.
So this isn’t theory. But it IS honest: some of the methods below I’ve done, some I haven’t, and I’ll tell you which is which every single time.
Fun fact: this was the first post I wrote when I came back to building this site seriously. I’ve since rebuilt it from the ground up, because the original skipped the most important part — actually answering the question. Let’s fix that.
The video game industry generates tens of billions of dollars a year in the U.S. alone, according to the Entertainment Software Association.
Regular gamers absolutely can carve off a piece of that.

1) Sell & Trade Games And Consoles
This is the fastest way to make money with video games, and it’s the one I know from behind the counter.
Back in 2006 through 2008, I helped a buddy of mine run a video game trading store. People brought in their old games, consoles, and gaming equipment, traded them toward the latest releases, and we resold the used stock.
I also sold my own games and consoles on our selling wall. Real inventory, real customers, real cash.
Two years of watching that trade counter taught me things most “sell your games” articles miss:
Complete-in-box beats loose every time. The case, manual, and inserts can double what a game sells for
Condition is everything. A resurfaced disc and a cleaned console shell move fast.
Scratched and dusty sit on the wall for months
Trade-in offers are wholesale, not retail.
Stores pay a fraction of resale value because they carry the risk.
Selling direct to another person always nets you more
Timing matters. Consoles spike around holidays and new-generation launches, when the previous generation gets hunted by bargain shoppers
In 2026, your “selling wall” is eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and local game stores.
The same rules apply. Sell direct for maximum cash or trade in for maximum convenience.
Never let a boxed console gather dust; it’s money sitting on a shelf.
Realistic earnings: a one-time cleanout of unused games and gear commonly nets $100 to $500+.
Ongoing flipping- buying underpriced lots and reselling.
This could turn into a full time gig if you get good at it and know the right yard sales to hit up.
Also, if you do research and know the value of some games and what to look for before you head out, is key.
2) Build A Gaming Website (My Path)
This is the method I actually built on, so here’s the unpolished version.
Around 2014-2015, I built a niche website focused on gaming headsets. Not “gaming” but more focused on gaming headsets.
The #1 rule if you want to make money with video games is to narrow down your niche and find your true target audience.
Video games are such a broad topic that you’ll never make a dime or even have your content discovered if you don’t niche down to find your target market.
One focused corner of a massive market.
It was one of the first websites I ever made money with.
And real talk? I didn’t make much. I was green; I didn’t fully know what I was doing.
I made the classic beginner mistakes.
Including relying on a single traffic source, which nearly killed the whole thing.
But that little headset site proved the model to me: write honest content about products you know.
Help people choose, earn a commission when they buy through your links.
That’s affiliate marketing, and it’s the reason this website exists today.
The math that made me a believer: promote a product that pays $50 commission per sale.
To reach $100,000 a year, you need 2,000 sales.
That’s 167 a month, or about 6 a day.
With an audience that trusts your gaming content, those aren’t fantasy numbers.
They’re a content and traffic problem, and both are learnable.
The advantage a website has over every other method on this list: it works while you sleep and it compounds over time.
Nobody can ban, demonetize, or algorithm you off your own site.
3) Stream On Twitch
Full transparency: I’ve never streamed.
So this is the researched version, clearly labeled.
The research says most streaming advice oversells it.
Streamers earn through subscriptions, viewer tips (bits), and ads.
The Twitch Affiliate program has a low entry bar, around 50 followers plus consistent recent streaming activity.
This is exactly why the field is so crowded.
The honest math: most small streamers earn coffee money for a long time.
The ones who break through treat it like a show, not a gaming session.
You need to be on a consistent schedule, personality first, gameplay second.
Usually, it takes a year or more of streaming to small rooms before momentum hits.
If you genuinely love performing and would stream for free anyway, it’s worth trying.
If you’re doing it purely for money, the odds say pick another door on this list.
4) Start A Gaming YouTube Channel
Also researched, not personally done — but it’s the content path I’d pick over streaming, and here’s why.
YouTube videos are searchable and permanent.
A guide you upload today can still earn views and ad revenue three years from now.
However, a stream disappears when you log off.
For one-person operations, that compounding matters enormously.
The monetization gate: the YouTube Partner Program requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours before ad revenue turns on.
Treat year one as building, not earning.
The winning play for regular gamers isn’t “become a famous personality”.
It’s searchable, useful content: build guides, boss strategies, settings optimization, honest gear reviews.
Answer questions gamers actually type into search, and the algorithm brings them to you.

5) Become A Game Tester
Getting paid to play unreleased games — the dream job on this list, and one I haven’t cracked yet.
It’s genuinely on my list, and when I complete my first paid playtest, this section gets updated with real numbers.
Here’s what my research shows the reality looks like.
Game testing splits into two very different things:
Paid playtesting — remote sessions where studios watch regular players try builds and give feedback.
Sessions typically pay a flat fee and happen through dedicated playtesting platforms. Inconsistent but real
The one I’d sign up for first is PlaytestCloud — $5 to $9 per 15-minute playtest, paid with no minimum threshold. I ranked it #1 in my roundup of the best product testing jobs, with the honest catches included.
QA testing — an actual entry-level industry job: methodically hunting bugs, writing reports, testing the same sequence dozens of times.
It’s work, not play, and it’s a legit foot in the door of the game industry
The scam filter is the same one I preach for every opportunity in this space: legit testing gigs never charge a fee to join.
Any site selling you “access” to game testing jobs is selling you nothing.
Game testing is the gaming cousin of product testing.
The same industry, same rules, same honest expectations.

6) Compete In Esports
Yes, tournament prize pools are real, and some are enormous.
No, this is not a realistic income plan, and I’d be lying to you if I framed it as one.
Esports is professional sports math: a tiny number of elite players capture nearly all the money.
They got there through thousands of hours of deliberate practice, usually starting young, usually in one game.
The realistic version for everyday players: local tournaments and online events with modest prizes, played for the love of competition with money as a bonus.
There’s also a whole economy AROUND esports — content, coaching, community organizing — that pays more reliably than competing does.
If you’re genuinely elite at one game, chase it.
For everyone else, esports is the lottery ticket on this list — fun to hold, bad to budget around.
7) Flip Gaming Collectibles
This one’s personal, because I live half of it already.
I’m a lifelong Resident Evil fan and a Funko Pop collector, and I walk convention floors every year.
I’ve watched the collectibles market from the buyer’s side for a long time.
I have insider knowledge about what sells out, what sits, and which exclusives triple in value.
Also, which hyped drops end up in clearance bins.
Honesty first: I’ve never sold collectibles for profit. But I’ve had the vendor table idea for one of the cons I attend.
Walking those floors has taught me how the money side works:
- Exclusives and limited runs drive the market. Con exclusives, retailer exclusives, and vaulted items are where values move
- Condition is currency — box condition matters as much as the item, same lesson as the game trade counter
- Knowledge is the edge. Flippers who know a franchise deeply spot underpriced items instantly. Casual sellers price wrong in both directions
Retro games belong here too — the same complete-in-box rules from section 1 apply, with the added heat of nostalgia pricing. If you already collect something you know deeply, you’re closer to this income stream than you think.

Which Path Actually Pays?
Real talk scoreboard, based on what I’ve done and what I’ve researched:
- Fastest cash: selling and trading games and gear. Money this week, but it’s one-time unless you flip seriously
- Best long-term income: a gaming website with affiliate marketing. Slowest start, highest ceiling, and you own the asset
- Best for performers: streaming and YouTube — if you’d create content anyway, the money can follow
- Wild cards: game testing (fun, inconsistent), esports (lottery odds), collectibles (great if you already have the knowledge)
My pick hasn’t changed since that little headset site: build the website.
Every other method rents its audience from a platform — the site is the only one you own.
